SAWFISH which means (YOUNG FISH GROW in EGGS inside their MOM), Sometimes sawfish are confused with another species SAWSHARKS because their similar snout. However, sawfish are much larger than sawsharks which only grow to around 5 feet in length. Sawfish also considered in the shark group.
In Australian waters 4-7 sawfish species are found. There are freshwater sawfish like green sawfish, dwarf sawfish and the narrow sawfish. It is estimated that some sawfish species can live over than 30 years old.
In the 19th century one of the most popular fish in the Indian River system is SAWFISH, while reported one fisherman can catch 300 sawfish in just one season. Survey in 1981 found there were no sawfish in the area.
The sawfish’s scientific name is Pristis microdon. Pristis means “saw” in Greek, and the word microdon refers to the word micros, meaning “small.”
The rostra teeth of sawfish are sometimes used for cockfights: individuals can attach the teeth to roosters’ legs to be used as spurs. This practice adds to the value of sawfish in the marketplace and Traditional Chinese medicine can use the eggs, bile, and oil of sawfish. The rostrum can also be used in religious ceremonies.
The price of a sawfish’s rostrum can add up to over $1,000 dollars. While the sale of rostrum is banned, sales still occur. Due to increased demand for sawfish fins, just one pair of fins can be sold for around $3,000 in some markets.
